Wednesday morning, March 2, local time (early morning, March 3, KST), the UN Security Council voted a resolution imposing the harshest-ever sanctions on North Korea, with unanimous approval from 15 member states, and North Korea officially responded to the UN sanctions Friday morning, March 4.
North Korea declared it would strengthen its nuclear power and be ready to fire its nuclear warheads at any time, in response to the sanctions of the international society. It was already predicted during the process of discussing the sanctions that North Korea would react in a negative way. However, the new UN sanctions on North Korea are very severe and take aim directly at its leadership. So, experts are urging the Government to keep a close watch on North Korea’s counter-move and respond to its unexpected actions
Before the UN Security Council adopted the resolution expanding sanctions against North Korea, Kim Jong-un, First Chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission, visited the Thaesong Machine Factory, which is one of North Korea’s ballistic missile production facilities, and expressed his will to continue to develop nuclear missiles without yielding to the pressure of the international community. This time, he visited a new, multiple rocket launcher test site.
The NDC First Chairman Kim remarked that “the situation has reached a very dangerous phase that can no longer be neglected as the enemies are intent on such last-ditch attempts as ‘beheading operation’ and ‘collapse of social system’ while working hard to violate the dignity and sovereignty of the DPRK and its right to existence,” and he added that “now is the time for us to convert our mode of military counteraction toward the enemies into a preemptive attack one in every aspect,” the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
He also said, “The national defense sector should deploy at an early date the new-type large-caliber multiple launch rocket system and other recently-developed strike weapons in the operations area of the Supreme Command so as not to allow the enemies to sleep in peace till the moment they meet their final end in their land. The only way for defending sovereignty of our nation and its right to existence under the present extreme situation is to bolster up nuclear forces both in quality and quantity and keep the balance of forces.” He stressed “the need to get the nuclear warheads deployed for national defense always on standby so as to be fired at any moment,” adding that North Korea would steadily develop new-type ultra-modern strike arms and equipment, make a fresh leaping progress in the strengthening of military capability this year greeting the Seventh Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and thus consolidate the country’s defense capability as firm as a rock.

The KCNA explained that North Korea had completed the new type large-caliber multiple rocket launching system after three years of research and development, which the NDC First Chairman Kim expressed great pride in. The KCNA also said that it is a precision-guided, high-tech, long-range and large-caliber multiple rocket launching system and the main target is South Korea.

Kim Jong-un inspected the test-fire, accompanied by Choi Ryong-hae, secretary of the WPK Central Committee, Hong Yong-chil and Kim Jong-sik, vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee, and Yun Tong-hyon, vice-minister of the People’s Armed Forces.
