On 8th of this month, the Independence Hall, Korean Independence Movement Institute said that it is going to compile a ‘Biographical Encyclopedia’ about the Korean Independence Movement for the 70th Anniversary of the Independence Day.
The Independence Hall published two volumes of the Korean Independence Movement encyclopedia in 1996, and five volumes about the movement and organization in 2004. Following these volumes, the new biographical encyclopedia which is to be compiled is based on the result of academic research which includes 16,000 Korean independence activists. The Independence Hall assessed it saying the “Compilation of the Korean Independence Movement Biographical Encyclopedia, is a Big Break for Accomplishing a Great National Achievement.” On this day, the inauguration ceremony is being held at the Seoul Press Center.
The biographical encyclopedia contains detailed information about the independence activists’ early years, education, ideas, ideology, their campaign, value, meaning as an activist and so forth. The Independence Hall says “the life and activities of the independence activists are the foundation as well as the source of history, and that the independence movement is not simply an anti-Japanese struggle but a peace movement for humanity to eradicate imperialism. They also explained that since the understanding of the independence movement’s history originated from studying the main independence activisits of the independence movement; the compiled biographical encyclopedia will be the history of the independence movement and furthermore, will be a national undertaking to set Korean history right.”
The Independence Hall’s Compilation Committee of 130 academics aims to publish the encyclopedia by 2019, which is the Centennial Anniversary when the Korean government-in-exile was established along with the March First (3.1) Independence Movement.
